tsk tsk I'm telling!!!

Cyberbullying
Grade 10 Media Journal Entry #

What did you think of the assembly about cyberbullying we saw?
What do we consider cyberbullying?
What would you suggest as an appropriate punishment for cyberbullying?
Any other comments.

ahhhhh I'm telling on you!! How many times have we heard THAT in our lives? A million times probably. Nobody likes a tattle-tale so people who get bullied are sometimes too afraid to tell someone because they might get singled out even more. This is the truth about bullying and it can only be stopped if people stand against it. We had an assembly about cyberbullying a few weeks ago? and everyone probably has their own theory about why we had an assembly. BUT that doesn't matter right now. To me, talking about how you can stop cyberbullying is so overrated. I know that sounds like a bad thing but to me it seems that in our society all we do is talk, sometimes we don't really act on it. Sure, they're talking about how cyberbullying is bad but seriously talking to teenagers about it doesn't really change anything. In my opinion, that assembly was pointless. I know i shouldn't say things like this but i don't think assemblies about cyberbullying actually helps. We all know what cyberbullying is and why it happens. People bully others because it makes them feel powerful or because the person who is being bullied is unfamilar to them. I think if the school board really wants to stop cyberbullying they should do more than assemblies. I know for sure that some people weren't even listening to the assembly. I think suspending or making that "bully" work with or have a sensible conversation with that person he or she bullied is an appropriate punishment for cyberbullying. Personally, i don't think cyberbullying will ever stop. Sure, the "bully" might get suspended but there's still a big chance that he or she will do it again. In our society, the "pecking order" is inevitable. It's sad but we humans are like this. Someone will always get picked on BUT of course we can stop it by helping that person in need and not leaving them by themselves when they need help the most.

ah music to my ears

Write a journal response with your thoughts on the article. Do you think Napster has really changed the world? Did the record companies really win the battle against pirated music or could they have won the battle earlier on? How would they benefit if they didn't push to shut down Napster?Take a look at the five lessons he's learnedl from the fall of Napster, what does this tell us about emerging technologies in our society? Can you think of another newly emerging technology going throught the same trial?

I remember that year when I first discovered Kazaa. I was happy that I could download music free; I went crazy downloading this and that, not for once thinking that I was “stealing”. Then came that faithful day, when I found out that Kazaa was being sued for allowing people to download things free. I freaked out and the first thing I did was uninstall the program thinking that my downloading can be traced back to me and be charged with “stealing” music from artists. I was young then and now I should’ve learned from that experience. But no, I didn’t, I still download music through Limewire or Ares, what can I say? I just can’t afford to buy all those songs.

In my years, of extensive downloading habits, I have never used Napster. I knew what it was, a website that sells music. However, when I read this article, I found out that Napster was just like Limewire before. I never heard of that lawsuit and how it was forced to shut down. Recording companies would’ve benefited more from a partnership with Napster but they just had to be ignorant. Building a partnership with Napster would’ve made them millions of dollars richer. However, since this kind of partnership was unknown to them they considered it a threat and thus, the fall of Napster began. Napster was sued and was forced to bankruptcy. A few years later Napster was bought by another company and now sells music. Successfully shutting down Napster, did not stop anything, newer programs are still being created today. Hundreds of artists are still losing money because of pirated music and there’s nothing they can do about it. Unless they have some type of technology that disables people from downloading free music.

Nevertheless, whatever recording companies or artists choose to do. I don’t think this kind of technology will ever subside because who passes up an opportunity to get free stuff ? No one, and so as long as there is a way for this kind of technology to exist it will never disappear. My advice to these recording companies is: If You Can't Beat Them, Join Them. Figure out how to become business partners with softwares such as Limwire or something and enjoy it while it lasts. For our technology is ever evolving and somehow, someday a newer and smarter technology will emerge and possibly ruin recording companies.

We love to say Wii

There has been quite a bit of hype surrounding the new Ninetendo Wii gaming system. Some say that the Wii's ability to "democratize" gaming for people of all ages and abilities is revolutionary. Do you think this is a true technological revolution or just hype? Please defend your opinion.

What makes Nintendo Wii so special? Is it because of its ability to "democratize" gaming for people of all ages or is it because of its unique gaming system, which lets you play by motion control?

Personally, I think that its revolutionary not because people of all ages can play it but because of its unique gaming system. When playing a video game, how many times have you caught yourself actually moving the same way you’re moving your character or whatever it is that you’re moving? Ok, maybe some of you don’t do that or would like to admit that they do. But I know for sure that sometimes when I play racing games and I have to turn the car I end up turning my body too as if it helps me play any better. When playing Nintendo Wii, it makes it so much easier to play and you won’t actually have to make up an excuse as to why you were moving. Nintendo Wii is revolutionary as far as gaming systems go but technology in general I’m not so sure. I think it might have helped us get closer to a true technological revolution but as far as I’m concerned I think people are just exaggerating a bit too much.

When Nintendo Wii first came out, a lot of people were thinking, “Oh My God, I want that! It’s so cool!” However, at that time, I think it was just hype because it was the newest thing in gaming systems it was far better than the existing, psp and xbox. However, I’m sure that as soon as a new gaming system comes out people will forget what was so special about Wii and move on to the next best thing.

When war meets video games

Our society today no longer find board games or video games such as Mario that interesting unlike 20 years ago. We are so used to seeing or hearing about violence everday that it is part of our everyday life. Teenagers today aren't easily satisfied, they want games that are more realistic and something that they can relate to (even if its stealing or killing people). In my opinion, I think war games are very popular now because its just plain fun. I admit I like war games because its fun to kill people (especially in Halo). I know that sounds wrong but it is fun and I know a million other people think the same. I don't know why its fun. I guess it’s the fact that people find it funny. Believe me people do. I think our society today is so used to hearing about violence everyday that it doesn’t bother them when they shoot someone till they die in war games. Even kids as young as five, play war games because that's the environment they grew up in. A lot of teenagers play war games because they find it entertaining. Some even turn it into a contest; they try and kill each other in the most violent way. I think it doesn’t stop people from being sensitive about war because playing war and being in an actual war are two different things. It’s like saying you're not afraid of heights while you're standing on the ground but when you go inside the CN tower and look down. You may find that the height is slightly terrifying. Killing computer AI's doesn’t bother me because its not real. You cannot compare virtual reality to reality, because when it comes to killing a real person, I wouldn’t even be able to hold a gun. Thinking about a real war in Canada still scares me and I would never want that to happen but playing war games at home is just way too much fun to give up. What can I say? I guess I’m just used to violent games that I don’t even cringe when they show blood squirting out of the dead body. Ever since they introduced war games, seeing someone die is like an everyday thing. So, when it actually happens it doesn’t really affect people (people who aren’t close to that person anyway). War games could also help people deal with war or emotions (eventhough its fake). Some people find that killing computer AI's very relaxing when they are angry. Personally, i get tired of video games very easily, so i need something new and exciting to play. That's why a lot of companies are making war games because that's what people find interseting these days.

Well that's my opinion anyway =D

An Ipod classroom

ok lets see......

I think i would learn well using an Ipod but theres the occasional distraction of listening to music and such. I need to be able to see the teacher physically not in just some Ipod screen. Although, maybe thats how they would do things in the future. But then sometimes i get bored of teachers talking on and on about things and since Mary Ward is a self-directed school, i think it would fit right into the curiculum because it would be exactly like taking online courses in eclass. Although, if you think about those people that just hallwalk everyday having an Ipod classroom will not do well for them. They would get even more lazy and might not even learn anything. I think that the idea that music helps us do work better was proven wrong. So if i'm correct, students could just pretend that they are listening to/watching lectures and just listen to music. That's what i would do. Having an Ipod classroom is possible but its the students that we have to think of. Of course it would be easier for the teachers but can students really learn more from Ipod lectures rather than real lectures?

Having scheduled days and going to seminars is hard enough for some students to follow. I mean sure they would like the idea of an Ipod classroom because they can just watch lectures anytime they want and they don't have to go to school. But they'll just keep on putting it off and off. Also, this would affect teachers as well because if they're already embracing the idea of an Ipod classroom, whats next? A robot teacher? Students talking to teachers online instead? Personally, i think they should have Ipod classroms but then again would i do better or worse?

First Journal

Ok first journal this is hard T_T

Cell phones. Do you remember the time when all the cell phones looked like big walkie-talkies? I remember that but that was ten years ago and back then only adults had cell phones. But now kids from age seven and up can have a cell phone. Over the course of ten years the cell phone industry has evolved significantly by targeting younger buyers. Younger buyers means cooler phones. Today we have an assortment of phones to choose from camera phones, mp3 phones, camera and mp3 phones; some phones are even as small as your smallest pocket in your pants and some are really thin like the Motorola razor. Camera phones although very convenient for those moments that you just have to have a picture of can be very dangerous also. People can use those cameras to invade someone's privacy or even for blackmailing by taking a humiliating pictures of people. People who do not have cameras or prefer having a convenient camera within their reach sometimes use camera phones. Especially for teenagers, for some reason WE like to take pictures with our friends. So most teenagers have camera phones meaning cell phone companies are making a LOT of money. However, like Ms.Huebner said with the good comes the bad. The bad thing about camera phones like I said is invasion of privacy. Some people who like their privacy can be caught doing whatever it is they are doing alone by taking a picture. Some people even take immoral pictures of girls wearing skirts if you know what I mean. Camera phones can also be used to catch someone in the act of picking their nose and use it to blackmail them. Cell phones can also cause radiation in the brain, which can lead to cancer. Did you know that? But we must always remember that cell phones have made a significant impact on our generation and for many years to come.
